This was a project that the client had wanted to schedule for years. She waited until she was certain she understood what she wanted to do. It started off with the selection of materials. The tile was the first thing she found. It's sea green seemed to fit with the house just one block from Ocean Beach. The idea was to move the home's one bath from the 1950's to the 21st Century. Simple lines, monochromatic palette, and the natural light from the skylight augmented by the sconces LED glow. Now, when you put together a budget to remodel the one bath in the house, don't forget the executive rental for four or five weeks. We saw the clients everyday, but a bonus for the project was their adventure of living in one of San Francisco's other neighborhood while we got the job done.
The sliding bar with a hand-held showerhead means no one needs to stoop to rinse the shampoo from their hair. A hand-held shower head is a great way to keep your feet and the shower clean. The tile has an alternating gloss and matte finish. A simple concept provides a stunning result. The soap dish goes in the dishwasher; the niche stays clean. We converted a tub to a shower so, as the clients age, they can easily step over the curb. Renovation for life is one of House to Home's specialties. Planning for your lifestyle while increasing the beauty of your surroundings.
So when the client set out selecting materials, she did so armed with an Allowance for each item as part of my proposal. It comes on a separate sheet called "Owner Provides." In her project it was the plumbing fixtures, tile, vanity, medicine cabinet, bath hardware, and these light fixtures. She hit all of the usual suspects' stores, including the internet. She wound up buying everything, but these two multi color LED sconces at Floorcraft. She was under the allowance on every item. The lighting fixture allowance was $750. She really loved these fixtures. And they make the room. She told me they were $1100.00. "That's not much over", I said. Then she said "Each."
Now I know, the picture looks like there is an optical illusion happening. But in order to get shoulder room at the vanity room and under the shower head we made the curb of the shower turn at 30 degrees right where you see the glass turn. The shower narrows to the tiled bench at the back end of the shower. That results in shoulder room at the vanity and under the shower head. Not only that, but the room gains an interesting geometry. Straight, but not all parallel lines and right angles. Some pizazz to the floor and glass, not born of trying to be off kilter, but allow form to follow function. In this case giving the husband a little shoulder room when he shaves.
"Designing for the house keeper 101." That narrowing of the shower by the vanity put enough room between the vanity and the glass of the shower enclosure that both stay clean. The floating vanity provides storage and still allows the mop to glide under unimpeded. The round front toilet keeps it from peeking out into the door way. And the tile bench is tilted slightly down hill in the front to have the water slide off onto the floor of the shower. If you keep the glass away from the edge of the curb, the outside can get a good scrubbing with resorting to an old tooth brush. If a bathroom is designed correctly it is easy to maintain. After all it is the most frequently-cleaned room in the house. These photos were shot a little over a year after we completed the project.
Even though this is the bathroom section of the site, you're looking through the kitchen to the hall outside the bathroom. That is the open door to the bathroom in the very lower left hand corner. The Falconer is on the wall of the hall just outside the bathroom. The interesting green section of wall with the glass bottles on the shelf actually covers the refrigerator. We added a recess light with a wall washer trim to throw light on the framed Tibetan cards that the client wanted to display. This was a "while you are here...... mini project." When I called to set up photographing the bathroom. the client mentioned this little add-on as something that brings her pleasure every day. When you remodel you need to remember you deserve joy and ease and comfort from your home. You need to realize you deserve the one thing that goes over budget, like the really cool sconces, or a little spot light on something that triggers a memory and brings you joy.
